Last year I had a interesting experience. After leaving a small village in the south of French, I moved on to the next town. On the way, a young man waved to me. I stopped my car and he asked me for a lift. As soon as he went on the car, I said good morning to him in French and he replied in the same language. Excepte a few words, i did not know French at all. In the trip we did not talk at all. When we nearly arrived at the town, the young man suddenly asked slowly, "Do you speak english?" As i soon learned, he was a english himself.

At the age of twelve years, the human body is at its most vigorous.
vigorous: robust, energetic
It has yet to reach its full size and strength, and its owner his or her full intelligence;
has yet to reach: euqals has not reached, a routine. but at this age the likelihood of death is least.
likelihood: the state of being probable: probability. something probable.
Earlier, we were infants and young children, and consequently more vulnerable;
vulnerable: 1. not protected against harm or injury. 2.susceptible to attack; assailable 3.esaily affected or hurt, as by criticism. in a position to receive greater or bonuses after winning one game of a rubber
later, we shall undergo a progressive loss of our vigour and resistance which, though imperceptible at first, will finally become so steep that we can live no longer, however well we look after ourselves, and however well society, and our doctors, look after us.
undergo: to pass through, experience, to endure, suffer
progressive:1.moving forward;advancing. 2Proceeding in steps 3. Favoring progress 4. increasing in rate as the taxable amount increases 5.tending to spread or become more servere 6.Designating a verb form that expresses anaction or condition in progress 6. a man who favors progress toward better condition
vigour: of vigor
imperceptible:1. impossible to perceit 2. insignificant small or slight
This decline in vigour with the passing of time is called ageing. It is one of the most unpleasant discoveries which we all make that we must decline in this way, that if we escape wars, accidents and disease we shall eventually 'die of old age', and that this happens at a rate which differs little from person to person, so that there are heavy odds in favour of our dying between the ages of sixty-five and eighty.
decline: 1. to express polite refusal 2.to slop downward 3. to deteriorate gradually: fail
n 1. the progress or result of declining 2.a downward slope 3. a disease gradually weakens the body.
odds: 1. chances 2. advantages given to weaker side of a contest to equalize the chances of all participants.
Some of us will die sooner, a few will live longer -- on into a ninth or tenth decade. But the chances are against it, and there is a virtual limit on how long we can hope to remain alive, however lucky and robust we are.
virtual: existing in essence or effect, though not in actual fact or form Normal people tend to forget this process unless and until they are reminded of it. We are so familiar with the fact that man ages, that people have for years assumed that the process of losing vigour with time, of becoming more likely to die the older we get, was something self-evident, like the cooling of a hot kettle or the wearing-out of a pair of shoes.
assume: 1. to take upon oneself 2. to take on, adopt 3. to pretend, feign 4. to take for granted: suppose
kettle: n a metal pot or container for boiling or stewing
stew: like boil
They have also assumed that all animals, and probably other organisms such as trees, or even the universe itself, must in the nature of things 'wear out'. Most animals we commonly observe do in fact age as we do, if given the chance to live long enough; and mechanical systems like a wound watch, or the sun, do in fact run out of energy in accordance with the second law of thermodynamics (whether the whole universe does so is a moot point at present).
observe: 1. to be or become aware of. notice esp through carefully attention
2. to watch attentively 3.To make a systematic or scientific obersivation of 4. to say casually: remark
5. to adhere to or abide by 6. to keep or celebrate
thermodynamics: phisics that deal with the relationship between heat and other forms of energy
moot: to bring up as a subject for discussion or debate
wound: the past presentation of wind, which means to wrap or to be wrapped around a center or another object
But these are not analogous to what happens when man ages.
analogous: similiar or like in such a way as to permit the drawing of analogy
A run-down watch is still a watch and can be rewound. An old watch, by contrast, becomes so worn and unreliable that it eventually is not worth mending. But a watch could never repair itself -- it does not consist of living parts, only of metal, which wears away by friction. We could, at one time, repair ourselves --well enough, at least, to overcome all but the most instantly fatal illnesses and accidents. Between twelve and eighty years we gradually lose this power; an illness which at twelve would knock us over, at eighty can knock us out, and into our grave. If we could stay as vigorous as we are at twelve, it would take about 700 years for half of us to die, and another 700 for the survivors to be reduced by half again.
wear away: if you wear something away or if it wear away, it becomes thin and eventually disappears because it is used a lot or rubbed a lot. wear out: 1. to make or become unusable through long or heavy use. 2. to use up or consume gradually
wear off: to diminish gradually in effect
